Strong technical expertise combined with 15 years of experience in Burkina Faso has secured COWI a major, five year contract within the agricultural sector in the West African country.

The aim of the newly won assignment is to improve framework conditions in the private agricultural sector in Burkina Faso.

The African country is one of the poorest in the world with more than 80 % of the population relying on subsistence agriculture and only a small fraction directly involved in industry and services. This makes the project of crucial importance to the involved areas.

COWI is to deliver technical assistance to the Danish Agricultural Sector Programme for Economic Growth. This includes support to the authorities and the private agricultural sector with the aim of achieving two primary goals:

  • Development of the National Programme for Rural Development (PNSR) as the major planning, monitoring, and financing framework for agricultural development in Burkina Faso.

  • Improvement of agricultural production, productivity, quality and commercialisation, specifically within selected value chains, such as maize, cowpea, cattle meat, shea butter and Arabic gum, in five regions. This will be done by optimising the legal and regulatory framework and by constructing public infrastructure.

Local experts to carry out the technical assistance

The technical assistance will be carried out by 13 long term, external experts within rural infrastructure construction and public finance management, 12 of them local Burkinabes. Short term experts will be involved as needed.

COWI will advise the national and the regional authorities on activities to be implemented.

A strong platform in Burkina Faso

COWI has been working in Burkina Faso for the last 15 years within the water, sanitation and rural sectors, and the country is still the major part of our Francophone business. Between 1998 and 2013, COWI has executed precursors of this newly won project on different Danida contracts.

On other projects within IWRM (integrated water resources management) COWI has furthermore provided several services within food security.
